U.K. law firms are representing claimants who believe they were injured by the allegedly faulty lens.
In 2015, The Guardian reported thousands of individuals had allegedly been fitted with the Mplus X lens, which is manufactured by Oculentis.
However, many began reporting they were experiencing Oculentis lens problems.
About 800 patients were thought to have been affected by Oculentis lens problems, the Daily Mail reported in January 2019. The implants reportedly become cloudy years after they are implanted.
Calcium deposits that build up for years cause the cloudiness, eventually becoming large enough to obstruct patients’ vision.
The manufacturer claimed the problem may be caused by phosphate crystals used during the hydration process interacting with silicone residue on the lens, according to The College of Optometrists.
And according to a BBC report, Oculentis claims there is evidence some patients may be predisposed to such problems or that some medications could play a role.
The problem has even affected some patients whose natural lenses were replaced during cataract surgery — the most commonly performed surgery in the United Kingdom, according to the Daily Mail. About 400,000 of the procedures are performed each year in the U.K.
However, the BBC reported, none of the Oculentis lenses currently available are believed to be affected by the issue.
The company says having the lenses replaced is the only remedy for the problem, and says it has paid surgeons to perform replacements; about half of those affected have undergone the replacement procedure, according to the BBC.
