Dogs Choice Dog Food Recall Overview:

  • Who: Dogs Choice is recalling three types of its frozen dog food.
  • Why: The food was found to contain salmonella.
  • Where: The recall is effective in the United Kingdom.

Dog owners across the United Kingdom should check their freezers for Dogs Choice frozen food after the food was found to contain salmonella.

In a recall notice posted by the Food Safety Agency (FSA), Dogs Choice says its Frozen Chicken and Beef, Frozen Chicken and Beef Ready Meal, and Frozen Chicken Liver — all sold in 500-gram packs with the batch code 080222+2 and best-before date of 08 August, 2022 — are being recalled due to the possibly deadly bacteria.

“Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause illness in humans and animals,” the recall notice says. “The product could therefore carry a potential risk because of the presence of salmonella either through direct handling of the pet food or indirectly, for example, from pet feeding bowls, utensils or contact with the faeces of animals.”

The notice says symptoms in humans include fever, diarrhea and abdominal cramps. It says infected animals may not necessarily display signs of illness, but symptoms can include diarrhoea.

Dogs Choice Consumers Urged To Return Products For Full Refund

The FSA says those handling and serving raw pet food should always clean utensils and feeding bowls thoroughly after use.

“Consumers should wash hands thoroughly after handling raw pet food, bowls, utensils or after contact with the faeces of animals,” the agency says in the recall notice. “Raw pet food should be stored separately from any food (especially ready to eat foods). Care should be taken when defrosting to avoid cross contamination of foods and surfaces.”

Consumers that have any of the recalled Dogs Choice packs are being urged not to use them and to instead return them to the store of purchase for a full refund.

Pet Food Contamination Can Be Deadly

The recall comes a month after Aldi issued a voluntary recall for its Pure Being Cat Advent Calendars and Pure Being Dog Advent Calendars due to a potential choking hazards. The recall was initiated after Pet Brands Products, LLC received a “small number” of customer complaints.

Earlier in 2021, a recall of more than 20 cat foods were recalled across the UK after the foods were linked to a deadly surge of cases in Feline Pancytopenia. At the time of the August recall, more than 528 cats across the UK had contracted the disease, and 63.5% had died.

The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) analysed the cat foods and the Food Standards Agency has issued a list of affected products, some of which are sold at Sainsbury’s. RVC said at the time the fatal illness was caused by toxic compounds that are produced by different types of fungi, and it can cause weight loss, loss of appetite and a decrease in healthy blood cells leading to infections and/or bleeding.

Sainsbury’s came under fire after the recall due to customers who had opted out of email marketing not receiving the recall warning.
