Women who have endured a vaginal mesh injury have joined a group action claim to recover compensation for their pain and suffering.

Vaginal mesh injury scandals have been ongoing for more than a decade, affecting countless women, according to Your Lawyers, which is representing claimants.

Women are taking legal action to hold someone accountable for the pain caused by their vaginal mesh injury.

According to the Independent Medicines and Medical Devices Safety (IMMDS) Review has shown vaginal mesh procedures are damaging and have put the lives of women and infants in danger.

In over two years’ worth of compiled information from women who have had vaginal mesh implants, the IMMDS Review found women with the implants developed vaginal mesh injuries, including bowel issues, chronic pain, mobility difficulties and ongoing infections.

Vaginal mesh implants are used as a treatment for pelvic-floor disorders. Vaginal mesh provides additional support to repaired weakened tissue.

Surgical mesh implants are typically used to treat women with pelvic organ prolapse (POP) or stress urinary incontinence (SUI), according to the Mayo Clinic. However, surgical mesh comes with risks, and countless women have developed a vaginal mesh injury after receiving an implant.

A vaginal mesh injury can happen when the mesh becomes entrenched in surrounding tissues and becomes difficult to remove. It is unclear if vaginal mesh implants can change in shape or size after the implant is in place.

Some women who have vaginal mesh implants have reported immune system conditions.

To complicate vaginal mesh procedure risks, many women were not notified about the possibility of vaginal mesh injury, according to the IMMDS Review. Women report that their vaginal mesh injury was shrugged off by doctors or blamed on symptoms of childbearing or menopause.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) said vaginal mesh implant surgery is a last resort procedure due to the potential risks.

The exact number of women who have experienced a vaginal mesh injury is not known. However, in 2016, the Birmingham Mail reported nearly 200 women were treated by Birmingham gynaecologist Dr. Angamuthu Arunkalaivanan, who used a vaginal mesh implantation technique that had been defunct since 2009.

“It is our understanding that the Trust is looking specifically into Dr. Arunkalaivanan’s continued use of a synthetic mesh during surgery for pelvic organ prolapse,” clinical negligence specialist Ian Cohen told the Birmingham Mail after the patients were recalled. “Despite the Trust’s decision to stop using it in 2009 following concerns about its long term effectiveness, it appears he carried on doing so.”

“This is quite a routine procedure and so the numbers affected could be significant,” Cohen added. “Although many operations have been successful, there are several complications that can arise afterwards such as pain, infection and incontinence which led to mesh surgery being withdrawn.

“There is also the issue of whether patients received all the correct information before giving consent.”

“I have conducted many reviews and inquiries over the years, but I have never encountered anything like this; the intensity of suffering experienced by so many families, and the fact that they have endured it for decades,” said Baroness Julia Cumberledge, who represented the IMMDS Review, according to the BBC. “Much of this suffering was entirely avoidable, caused and compounded by failings in the health system itself.”

If you believe you have suffered a vaginal mesh injury, you have three years from the date of your injury to file a claim, according to Your Lawyers.
