Brompton Electric Bike Recall Overview:

  • Who: Brompton has recalled some of its electric bicycles.
  • Why: Brompton electric bikes that have not already been upgraded have an issue with the mudguard design that poses a risk of injury.
  • Where: The Brompton recall applies to all affected bikes worldwide.

Some Brompton electric bikes have been recalled due to an issue with the mudguard that can cause injury. The issue arises when objects become caught between the mudguard and the tyre, potentially inhibiting the wheel rotation or causing it to stop suddenly.

Brompton notes that this recall only affects electric bikes that have not been fitted with the mudguard upgrade that the company initiated in late 2021. The Brompton electric bike design upgrades were reportedly developed based on customer feedback and included improvements to the mudguard and the battery catch.

“Although the risk of an accident occurring is very low, the safety of our customers is of the utmost importance to us, and we have now begun a programme to repair all affected bikes as part of an official recall,” says the Brompton electric bike recall notice.

Brompton Electric Bikes Only Need Upgrade if They Did Not Receive 2021 Fix, Company Says

Customers who have already had a new mudguard stay and battery catch upgrade through the Brompton Electric Upgrades Programme do not need to take any action. Their electric bikes have already received the necessary upgrades to increase the amount of space between the mudguard and tyre.

The Brompton upgrade will also fit a new battery catch to reduce the movement between the battery and the bike to minimise battery disconnections, prolong the life of the electronics and improve the rider’s experience.

If you are not sure if your electric bicycle is affected by the Brompton recall, you can follow the guide on the Brompton electric bike recall page. If your electric bike has a serial number greater than 2111030089, it was built with the improved mudguard stays and does not need an upgrade. If your Brompton electric bike has a serial number lower than 2111030089, the guide will help you determine whether or not your bike needs an upgrade.

Contact your local Brompton Junction or Brompton Electric Accredited Retailer to schedule an appointment to upgrade your Brompton electric bike.

Brompton is also offering customers affected by the electric bike recall a £20 voucher as a gesture of goodwill. This compensation must be claimed by 21 September 2022.

Last year, the consumer watchdog agency Trading Standards warned that Isinwheel brand electric scooters pose a fire risk when they are folded. The issue reportedly arises because the handlebars have sharp edges that can cut the wiring. When the wires are cut, they can cause the circuits to catch fire.
