  • Why: The products have a possible microbiological contamination risk.
  • Where: UK

John West is recalling two canned fish products sold at popular supermarkets including Morrisons, Waitrose and Tesco as they may have a microbiological contamination.

A recall notice for John West Boneless Sardines in Sunflower Oil and John West Sardines in Olive Oil was posted on the Food Standards Agency (FSA) website July 21.

“These products may contain microbiological contamination and could be unsafe to eat,” the notice states. It did not state whether anyone had been adversely affected by the products.

Customers should look for the batch codes 109, 110, 111, 112 or 113 on the cans, along with a best before date of December 2026 to identify the affected products.

Full refund available for customers

According to the FSA, if you have bought either of the products, do not eat them and instead return them to the store from where they were bought for a full refund.

The fish products were sold through Morrisons, Waitrose, Tesco, Ocado, Amazon, EH Booth, James Hall, Century Park, Co-op and James Wilson stores.

The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

In 2021, Morrisons recalled its 6 Iced Buns product as they contained milk, but did not have the ingredient listed in bold type on the label.

The lack of emphasis on the ingredient posed a health risk to anyone that had an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents, the recall notice said.

Meanwhile, in April this year, Tesco recalled some of its soup products due to concerns that they may contain metal fragments.
